Forge Recycling officially opens, Europes largest covered recycling site

The new, state of the art plant being officially opened on 22nd October at Forge Recycling, part of the Lawrence Group, incorporates some of the most innovative techniques and equipment to separate the highest possible level of waste and recover recyclable materials. It has the capacity to process in excess of 500,000 tonnes of waste per annum from construction, demolition, commercial and industrial streams.

Materials such as cardboard, plastics, paper, brick rubble, concrete, soils, glass, plasterboard and metals are recovered and recycled by the new plant through a series of automated processes, without the need to be separated prior to collection from the customer.

Forge Recycling's Customer Relations Manager Alison Powell explains: “We have worked very closely with Blue Machinery and plant manufacturers Kiverco to develop this state of the art system to make it as efficient and productive as possible. There are many benefits it offers not only to the customer (who only has to separate waste into wet and dry), but also to us here during the waste management process. For example, all dry recyclable waste can be collected in one container for one collection, reducing the need for multiple handling and multiple recycling containers on site. The only waste collected separately is wet (food) waste either in a bag collection service or wheelie bins to suit customer requirements,” Alison says. “And glass, as another example, is bulked up for use in the production of recycled glass products, wood is graded, shredded and re-used in the manufacture of animal bedding products, as well as diverse products such as chipboard, kitchen, bedroom and office furniture, flooring, fuel, equestrian and horticultural surfaces, playground floorings and compost.”
